Jolanthe 1956 Tommy Murphy, Marie Kelly

In 1951 Br. Ryan decided to stage another Gilbert & Sullivan show Iolanthe and to recruit four ex students to play the leads. This turned out to be a providential decision as these men were immediately bitten by the theatre bug, so that when Br. Ryan and Br. Fahy were transferred from Enniscorthy they decided to call a meeting to reform the Enniscorthy Light Opera Society.

Almost eighty people attended this meeting in April 1952, and the result was a production of
The Pirates of Penzance.

Several other memorable Gilbert and Sullivan operettas were staged before the Athenaeum was closed to became a clothing factory in the 1960ís.
