2008 - West Side Story

Past Shows > 1994 - today

This year saw a hugely successful production of Enniscorthy Musical Society’s West Side Story. The society which have had great success over the last number of years with acclaimed productions such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s spectaculars ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, brought this celebrated Broadway smash, which is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary on stage this year, to delighted Enniscorthy audiences.

The show told the story of love and loss in the heart of New York City in the turmoil of the 1950’s. The lead characters of Maria and Tony find themselves torn between their love for one another and their loyalty to their rival communities. Local favourites Brendan Redmond and Therese Canavan led the enthusiastic cast, along with guest stars Rebecca Hadrill and Lee Hynes from Wexford.

For this vast production, the society were guided by the talented and imaginative creative team which brought Joseph and Hot Mikado to Enniscorthy in recent years. At the helm was veteran director Ray Quigley, who has been invaluable in developing the talent and teamwork which is an essential part of EMS. Kevin Kennedy, who has worked intensely with EMS over the last two years, returned as musical director for the popular musical numbers Maria, Cool, America and the iconic Tonight, which had audiences mesmerized with amazing harmonies and breathtaking solos. New Ross based choreographer, Anne-Marie Cooney transformed local men into the rival gangs of The Sharks and The Jets, with dazzling dance and choreographed fight scenes never before seen on an Enniscorthy stage.

The society was thrilled to bring this excited and energetic production to Co. Wexford this year and is very thankful for the support of local businesses who generously sponsored the production. As always local people flocked to Coláiste Bríde Secondary School for the much anticipated production.

The society is very welcoming of new members and talented actors, singers and dancers of all ages are welcome to contact the society for information on next year’s production by phone on 087 6636679 or by email
